Alannah Yip wins the IFSC Pan American Combined Championships

Feb 29, 2020

Alannah Yip wins the IFSC Pan American Combined Championships, and becomes Canada’s newest Olympian.

Alannah Yip, of North Vancouver BC, won the 2020 International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Pan American Championships, taking place at Sender One LAX in Los Angeles. With a first place in Boulder, a third place in Lead, and a fifth place in Speed – for a combined score of 15 – Alannah Yip took home the win, and with it, the last available spot for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Alannah Yip will join teammate Sean McColl representing Canada at the 2020 games.

“It is exciting to see Alannah prevail after putting so much effort into her training,” says Christiane Marceau, Executive Director of Climbing Escalade Canada (CEC). “Alannah is one of the stronger strongest climbers in Canada, and she has proven today that she deserves to be on the Olympic team.”

Alannah Yip won her first National Climbing Championship at the age of twelve and has won seven Open National titles since then (3 Lead, 3 Boulder, 1 Speed). She is a graduate of UBC with a B.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering and is also a climbing coach for the Climb Base 5 North Shore Youth Team. She is coached by Andrew Wilson, the National Head Coach for Climbing Escalade Canada.

Sport Climbing will be featured for the first time at the Olympic Games between August 3-6, 2020.

Climbing Escalade Canada is the Canadian governing body for Sport Climbing, which includes the disciplines of Bouldering, Lead Climbing, and Speed Climbing.
